CHILD PHYSICAL ABUSE

6. Parents Who Show Little Concern
Notes:

Parent shows little concern for child or injury

  • Parent is not concerned about seeking medical treatment, or
  • Seems unconcerned about the child’s feelings, or
  • Minimises or dismisses the child’s feelings or the seriousness of the injury
Information:

You may notice a Parent shows little concern for the child or an injury so there’s a lack of treatment and care provided. A Parent who shows very little concern can be trying to remain in denial – thinking that if they don’t make a fuss then maybe everyone else won’t either.

They can also be desensitised because of the numerous other abusive injuries their child has received – so they don’t think a particular injury is worth being concerned about. They could also be preoccupied with their own injuries and abuse if they live in a violent household.

A lack of concern can also be a result of negative feelings or resentment towards the child.

Some Parents, maybe due to an unwanted or childhood pregnancy, depression or mental illness, or other reasons can develop a resentment for their children that manifests in abuse and neglect.
