DISCLOSURES
11. Be Honest
Notes:
Honesty is extremely important during a disclosure.
- You have to ensure you are honest with the child - no matter how tempting it might be to make it easier on both of you by telling them a little lie.
- You only need to tell them as much as they ask about - but don't lie when answering a direct question.
- If you are unable to answer all the questions of the child it is ok to let them know.
- Tell them you will try and find out the answer and let them know as soon as you know.
Information:
Tip No 11 - Be honest
Be honest. Don’t just tell children what they want to hear and don’t make up answers.
If they ask a question and you don’t know the answer, then tell them you don’t know but you’ll try and find out and let them know as soon as you can.
Children often worry about disclosing – or they may start to worry after disclosing – so it’s important to answer any questions they have honestly and for them to know that you’ll be there to answer questions.
