You can consult the Children, Families and Young People section of the DFFH website and access the many resources they have available for mandatory and voluntary reporters.
Look After Yourself
Let’s be real about this – this is not fun stuff – and you may have some difficult feelings about what you are told when a child discloses. You need to take care of yourself. Make use of your Employee Assistance programs and most of all talk to you senior supervisor about it.
You can access the many resources they have available and also a copy of the legislation.
One final point – LOOK AFTER YOURSELF! We know how hard it is listening to some of these disclosures and wondering about the kids after hours and worrying about whether you’ve done all you can. There are some very difficult feelings that can crop up when you’re dealing in this kind of information – so be alert for your own warning signs, talk to someone, and seek assistance earlier rather than later. You will be surprised once you start talking about it exactly how much it really can get under your skin – don’t let yourself become a casualty of the abuse.
