Child Safety and Protection Training Requirements in the Early Years Sector

Child Protection Helping Services Exceed National Quality Standards

Important Child Protection Update from our CEO

As a Child Protection Expert, I want to share my reflection on the new Child Safety and Protection training being offered to the industry and highlight some dangers it presents to the industry.

The biggest danger to children's safety and wellbeing in any environment is when child protection training is seen only as a compliance box.

The harsh realisation is with any free training offered, it is typically broad, standardised, and not tailored to the complexed environments of early childhood settings. Children experiencing harm is rarely associated with straightforward solutions. The signs can be subtle, cumulative, and easily misunderstood without deeper training.

Relying solely on free child safety and protection training falls short of equipping early years educators with the depth of knowledge and confidence required to navigate the increasingly complex realities children face today.

The Complexity of Child Protection in Early Childhood

Early years educators work in a uniquely sensitive space where children may not have the language or capacity to disclose harm directly. Recognising non-verbal cues, changes in behaviour, or developmental regression requires a sophisticated understanding of child development, trauma, and attachment. More advanced professional learning can help educators:

  • Interpret behaviours through a trauma-informed lens
  • Understand the impact of neglect, domestic violence, and intergenerational trauma
  • Respond appropriately to disclosures or suspicions
  • Build trusting relationships that support children’s sense of safety

Without this deeper knowledge, there is a risk of under-identifying harm - or misinterpreting behaviours that are actually signals of distress.

Continual Learning

Knowledge needs to be continually developed through continual professional development in key areas such as:

  • Supporting Cultural Safety and Inclusion (Community, family and child)
  • Strengthening Professional Judgment (Decision making process)
  • Keeping Pace with Evolving Knowledge (child protection is not a static field)
